Irving, Texas is just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and there are many hotels and motels in the area that cater to weary business travelers. One of the surprising things to me, living in Southern California, is how much you get for your money in Texas. San Marcos, Texas is rife with activities for the entire family. Singer/songwriter Mac Davis once had a hit song called, Happiness is Lubbock, Texas in the Rearview Mirror. A native of Lubbock, Davis couldnt wait to escape the west Texas town for Hollywood as a young man. As the song concludes, he returns home and sings, Now, happiness is Lubbock, Texas getting clearer and clearer. Lubbock today is a thriving metropolis on the plains of west Texas, home to Texas Tech University and a booming energy industry.
A childhood friend of mine, Mike Leach, is the head football coach at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He has told me how he loves the city. The notorious Bobby Knight coaches basketball there. Lubbock is on the map for more ways than one. Long known as a hotbed of mineral wealth, Lubbock is a booming city of more than 200,000 people.
